One tola is not 10 grams. Learn the 11.6638g conversion, how to price a tola from a per-gram rate, and why purity must be matched before comparing quotes.

1 tola is not the same as 10 grams

A traditional gold tola weighs approximately 11.6638 grams. Ten grams is exactly 10 grams. The difference is about 1.6638 grams, so treating the two units as interchangeable can create a meaningful pricing error.

Financial and gold-market educational sources in India commonly use the 11.6638g conversion. The safest approach is to convert every quote to grams before comparing values.

The conversion formula

For one tola:

1 tola = 11.6638 grams

To convert tolas to grams:

grams = tolas × 11.6638

To estimate the metal value of one tola from a per-gram gold rate:

1-tola reference value = per-gram rate × 11.6638

Purity still matters

A tola is a unit of weight, not a purity grade. One tola of 24K and one tola of 18K weigh the same but do not contain the same amount of fine gold.

IBJA publishes reference rates for multiple fineness categories including 999, 916 and 750. To price a tola correctly, choose the rate for the correct purity first and then multiply by 11.6638.

For example, if you are valuing 22K jewellery, use the 22K/916 per-gram reference rather than a 24K/999 rate.

Why “10 grams = 1 tola” causes trouble

Ten grams is about 14.3% lighter than one tola. On a high-value metal, that difference is too large to ignore. A verbal quote can sound similar while representing materially different weights.

If one shop quotes “per tola” and another quotes “per 10 grams,” convert both to price per gram before deciding which is cheaper.

Why rounding can change the bill

Some conversations casually round a tola to 11.66g, 11.7g or even 10g. Small rounding differences may be harmless for a quick mental estimate, but a purchase invoice should use the exact weight recorded on the scale and bill. The difference becomes more important as the number of tolas increases.

For example, five tolas equals 58.319 grams using 11.6638g per tola. Calling five tolas “50 grams” would understate the weight by more than 8 grams. At modern gold prices, that is far too large a gap to treat as a rounding error.

A worked comparison without fixing today's price

Suppose a 22K reference rate is R rupees per gram. Ten grams is worth 10 × R on a metal-value basis. One tola is worth 11.6638 × R. Because both values use the same purity and same per-gram rate, the difference comes only from weight.

This formula is safer than copying an old rupee example because the live rate changes. Use the current 22K/916, 18K/750 or 24K/999 rate at the time of calculation.

Tola price is still not a jewellery invoice

Multiplying a per-gram rate by 11.6638 estimates the metal reference value. It does not automatically include making charges, stones, retail premium or GST.

IBJA states that its benchmark gold rates are without 3% GST and making charges. For jewellery, CBIC says GST is payable at 3% of the total transaction value whether the making charge is shown separately or not.

Tola, gram and the site's weight page

The Gold Price by Weight page on this site calculates 1 tola using approximately 11.6638 grams and shows separate 24K, 22K and 18K references. That makes it possible to compare a traditional tola quote with modern gram-based prices on the same purity basis.

The most important habit is simple: convert weight first, match purity second, then compare retail charges.
