A source-based explanation of the major forces behind Indian gold prices: international gold, USD/INR, domestic policy and the gap between benchmark metal rates and retail jewellery bills.

Gold price in India article cover — Gold Market Guide

Start with the global gold market

Gold is traded internationally, so global bullion prices are an important starting point for Indian prices. Changes in interest-rate expectations, bond yields, the US dollar, inflation expectations, geopolitical risk and investment flows can all move international gold.

Recent 2026 market reporting illustrates the mechanism: Reuters reported sharp gold moves alongside changes in US Treasury yields and Federal Reserve expectations. These drivers do not determine an Indian shop invoice by themselves, but they affect the global metal price that feeds into domestic benchmarks.

USD/INR matters

India’s gold market is also exposed to the rupee because international gold is priced in US dollars. A weaker rupee can make imported gold more expensive in rupee terms even if the dollar gold price is unchanged.

The World Gold Council’s June 2026 India update noted that domestic gold prices had diverged from international performance, with INR depreciation and a duty change among the important reasons. This is a useful example of why “international gold up/down” does not always translate one-for-one into the Indian rupee price.

Domestic policy and supply costs

Import duties, taxes and wholesale market conditions can influence domestic prices and premiums. Because policy can change, current tax/duty claims should be checked against official sources before making a purchase decision.

Benchmark rate vs retail bill

IBJA publishes India benchmark rates for multiple gold fineness levels. Its public page states that the rates are without 3% GST and making charges. A jewellery buyer therefore needs to separate the benchmark metal rate from the final retail bill.

CBIC’s jewellery FAQ states that GST is payable at 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether making charges are shown separately or not.

Main drivers at a glance

DriverWhy it matters in India
International goldSets the global metal backdrop
USD/INRConverts global dollar value into rupee economics
Import/tax policyChanges domestic landed cost and transaction cost
Wholesale supply/demandCan affect local premiums/discounts
Jewellery making chargesAffects final product bill, not benchmark purity price

Why prices can move even when jewellery demand is quiet

Short-term gold-price moves can be driven by financial markets even when local jewellery shops are not unusually busy. For example, changes in bond yields and interest-rate expectations can change the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset such as gold. A stronger or weaker US dollar can also influence the international gold price.

In India, the rupee adds another layer. If the rupee weakens against the dollar, importing the same dollar value of gold can require more rupees. Domestic duty and tax changes can create another step change in landed cost. Wholesale premiums or discounts can then reflect local supply and demand conditions.

The final retail jewellery bill sits one layer further away because it adds product-specific workmanship and other charges. This chain explains why “gold price” can mean several different numbers depending on whether someone is talking about global spot, an Indian benchmark, a bullion product or a finished ornament.

FAQ

Who decides the gold price in India?

No single jewellery shop or government office sets every retail gold price. International markets, currency conversion, domestic policy, benchmark rates and individual retail charges all play roles.

Why can Indian gold rise when international gold is flat?

A weaker rupee or changes in domestic duty/premium conditions can push the rupee price higher even when international dollar gold changes little.

Why is my jeweller’s price different from IBJA?

First check purity, unit and timing. Then separate making charges, stones/non-gold components and GST from the benchmark metal rate.
