916 means fineness, not weight
“916” is a fineness number. It indicates 916 parts of gold per 1,000 parts of the alloy, or about 91.6% gold by mass. In common Indian jewellery terminology, that is associated with 22K gold.
The number does not mean 916 grams, and it is not a product model number. It is a purity reference.
22K and 916 belong together
A 22K jewellery quote should be compared with a 22K/916 rate. IBJA publishes a separate 916 benchmark alongside 999, 995, 750 and 585 fineness. Using the 999 benchmark for a 916 item would overstate the pure-gold content.
What should a BIS hallmark show?
BIS says a hallmarked gold jewellery item includes three components: the BIS logo, purity in caratage as well as fineness, and a unique six-digit alphanumeric HUID. Consumers can verify the HUID in the BIS Care app.
For a 22K item, the purity/fineness component is commonly shown as 22K916.
916 vs 999
| Mark | Approximate gold content | Common context |
|---|---|---|
| 999 | 99.9% | High-fineness bullion/reference |
| 916 | 91.6% | 22K jewellery |
| 750 | 75.0% | 18K jewellery |
The table is about purity only. It does not tell you the making charge, retail premium or final resale value.
Why 22K is used in jewellery
Pure gold is relatively soft, so jewellery often uses an alloy rather than near-pure bullion fineness. The added alloy content can improve practical durability while still keeping a high gold proportion. Design, stones and workmanship remain separate from the purity number.
How 916 affects price calculations
Because 916 and 999 contain different proportions of gold, a 916 item should not be priced by simply taking the 999 rate and treating the weights as equivalent without a purity adjustment or a dedicated 916 benchmark. IBJA publishes 916 separately, which makes the comparison clearer.
When a jeweller advertises “22K rate,” ask whether the displayed number is the store’s 22K/916 rate or a 24K reference shown for general market context. On the final invoice, the purity used in the rate calculation should match the item’s marked purity.
The fineness number also helps when comparing old jewellery. An older piece described only as “22K” still needs testing or hallmark information if its actual fineness is uncertain. A label or verbal description is not a substitute for an appropriate purity check.
